INTRODUCTION

This website is a guide to the paintings and other artwork that I have produced over the last 55 years.  The work included in the site begins in 1966 when I was a graduate student at the Yale School Art and continues to the present. Since 1972, I have lived and worked in my loft on Greene Street in SoHo, New York City, where I have produced hundreds of paintings and other artwork some of which is presented here. The ideas that I explore in my paintings are progressive, one group of work leading to another, and I have written about the journey in a limited way throughout the site. Some work and text appear in more than one section. This section of the site begins with the most recent work and goes backwards in time. The developmental aspect of my work is in reverse chronological order as many viewers are interested in seeing the most recent work first.

RECENT HISTORY

2024 - 2004

Process has always been a central focus in my work. I am interested in the way I make the painting, how the elements of the painting interact with each other, and how parts of the painting are hidden and revealed. I am continually manipulating different elements in each work to produce a unique visual statement that reflects the language I have developed over many years. The underlying structure of the grid has defined the parameters of much my work after I moved away from action painting that I explored in my earliest work. The paintings become confrontational with a strong physical presence as they move outward from the picture plane of the canvas. The surfaces are rich with color and texture and often appear to be carved like a bas-relief, with repetition, symmetry and pattern contributing to their vibrating energy as the paintings assert themselves off the wall.

UP SCALE

2024 - 2017

In these recent works, the scale suggests a space beyond the edges. Sometimes the titles reflect my emotional thinking and my interest in politics and recent events. The paintings in this section utilize the grid as a basic compositional structure while building out a surface that is carved and relief like. Layers of paint are elements in a construction and have physical presence. Pattern, repetition, and direction create movement, vibration and activity.

XYZ PAINTINGS

At the end of 2018, a long time friend died unexpectedly. These paintings reflect my feelings about the ending of her life – X (Canceled), Y (Loss) and Z (Reversal of Fortune). The paintings are formal in nature and have large letter like shapes contrasted by rhythmic patterns.

DIAMONDS AND CHEVRONS

Many paintings from this period have central diamonds surrounded by a patterned environment.   The directionality of the area around the diamonds contrasts with the center image.  I have used this format in paintings both large and small. These paintings incorporate both metallic and opaque acrylic paint.   The Chevrons are part of a series of works in a long thin format.  Again, a large shape fills the canvas moving in one direction while surrounding patterns creates opposition and movement beyond the edge.

RESIST

During the inception of the Trump administration, I began to do a series of small works that were part of my coping with the new political reality. In these paintings, I experimented with different combinations of color and pattern using the same format.
